The Ban Ki-moon Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and Salzburg Global, invites you to attend the “International Forum on Global Citizenship Education, Partnerships and Peace”. The Forum will explore how Global Citizenship Education (GCED/SDG 4.7) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD/SDG 4.7) can serve as critical levers for peacebuilding and global solidarity in times of growing global challenges.
This conversation comes at a pivotal moment. Education is a powerful foundation for peace: it fosters dialogue, mutual understanding, social cohesion, and the 21st-century skills needed to navigate differences constructively. Yet it is also among the first sectors disrupted by conflict and crisis. Today, 273 million children and young people are out of school worldwide – 127 million of them in crisis-affected countries – underscoring the urgent need to both harness education as a force for peace and protect it in times of crisis.
As the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approaches its final years and UNESCO prepares to define education priorities and strategies beyond 2030, the Forum offers a timely platform to unite government officials, civil society actors, formal and non-formal educators, youth, and business leaders.
The Forum will provide a space for open dialogue, reflection, and exchange to generate recommendations in an outcome paper on how education and peace can be protected, sustained, and prioritized, placing GCED and ESD at the core of its efforts. The paper will be shared with UNESCO and other key stakeholders to shape the future of education beyond 2030.
The Forum is taking place immediately after Salzburg Global’s “Education Retreat: Education for Human Flourishing: Salzburg Global”.
